So, Tokai gets to go to the pet ER today for her bloating and the fact that she appears to be eating normally and pooping, but her poop contains some kind of mica-like flakes. Special, special times. :C Why does life always suck at once?

Update: Tokai is not, as I had feared, impacted! Apparently mature female leopard geckos sometimes just...spontaneously generate two eggs (unfertilized, unless for some ineffable reason god chooses to show up for the second coming as an adorable and friendly lizard). They apparently do this yearly. I had no idea--none of the books or resources I have on geckos had said anything about egg generation happening independently of mating. The flakes are apparently due to some dehydration (a lot of water, etc. goes into making the eggshells). Apparently all I have to do is soak her, and wait, and give her a hut with enough moss to dig around in. So, my gecko isn't gonna die. BEST news! Bad news: I spent a lot of money and effort today finding this out.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope Tokai can easily recover for whatever ails her.

I'm glad she's going to be okay, although I'm sad you had to go through that much effort and expense to determine it.

komodos also don't need to have sex to have kids. So I find this forum with people asking "why do they have sex then?" and I'm ROTFL to myself. Two reasons spring to mind quite easily: a) keeping a diverse population going so the species doesn't die out from deformities (bound to happen if one female tries to spawn an entire race on her own .. . you get the idea); b) maybe they ENJOY it? Other species have been known to switch gender in order to reproduce, if there are too many of one or the other. Nature. Gotta love it! :)

I've heard some of the eggs can hatch to be male (apparently it's not pure parthenogenesis), so you could have one female produce males and females, and then those could interbreed. I'm curious if anyone has ever wrecked an ecology by importing one female komodo dragon on the grounds that it couldn't breed, and so won't spawn a horde of superpredators.

Bluejays in captivity lay an egg about once a year. I remember this from one we acquired by accident as a chick. She'd kinda sit on it for a few days, then eat it.
