Why isn't the "test" noise on a fire alarm something that sounds more pleasant? You need to get so close to it to press the button, and then there's this ear-splitting beep at close range.
It's to make sure that you are unwilling to actually test the smoke alarms unless you have already had significant hearing damage, in order to preferentially ensure the survival of people who go to rock concerts. It's a conspiracy by the record labels.
