Why isn't the "test" noise on a fire alarm something that sounds more pleasant? You need to get so close to it to press the button, and then there's this ear-splitting beep at close range.

It's to make sure that you are unwilling to actually test the smoke alarms unless you have already had significant hearing damage, in order to preferentially ensure the survival of people who go to rock concerts. It's a conspiracy by the record labels.

Well, if it had a "pleasant beep" and "actual fire beep", it would be terrible if the pleasant beep worked but the actual fire beep was borken...

You might want to use the fire alarm test to check where in the building the alarm is audible. And wear earplugs if anywhere near it. Ugh.

I always wear my shooting range muffs when testing mine.

I also use them for the lawn mower, blender and vaccuum, all of which are obnoviously noisy.
