I am wondering if I should go ahead and pre-register for this year's Boskone, from Feb. 15-17th 2008.

Pros:
- I might get to see some folks I haven't for years, if they make it up.
- I might get to meet some new folks.
- I like bigger art shows; Readercon (as wonderful as it is) has no art show. Vericon has one, and it's generally good, but it's not huge.
- I would get to see more of what's going on in a semi-larger world of fandom.
- It's close, so I can go there and go home when I want.
- If I pre-register it's cheaper.

Cons:
- I will already have spent some time earlier on that month traveling, with the inevitable associated tiredness and expense. I'll want some time to catch up at home.
- It's quite large, and if friends and associates I know go to it, I haven't found them or met up with them. I often go wander around to panels alone. They're very interesting, but it's better if you have people to talk to.
- If I don't pre-register and then decide to go it's rather expensive.
- I haven't read any of David Weber's (GoH) books. Should I? It's a genre (milirary SF) which I find interesting when well-done, but boring as wallpaper when not.
- The last time I went, I was (poorly!) propositioned by a married(!) con-goer. It was skeezy and not ok.

Moot points:
- I have a lot of January/Febuary activities already scheduled.
- I will still be learning the ropes of my new position at work.

Other points:
- I can listen to Bach indefinitely; I think I will keep him on when I am doing writing this afternoon.
- The proofs of "Last Yangtze Dolphin" have been returned.

I will be going to Boskone. And I feel under no obligation to read the works of David Weber.

(I fully support Mervyn Peake, however.)

Boskone has traditionally not looked that interesting to me, but if
it piques your interest, you should at least consider going. I'd also
check into what else might be happening that weekend and the weekends
surrounding.

David Weber = pure awesome (and now you are making me want to go to Boskone, damn you). The Honor Harrington books are excellent and not nearly as military sci-fi as they look; they run to about 80% characterization, world-building, and plot and 20% warship porn. For you, I would say to start with the second one, The Honor of the Queen. The first one is very military heavy, while the second has lots of world-building and cultural conflict.

The book I really, really recommend is Off Armageddon Reef. It is what happens when a very talented author puts repressive religion, 18th century warship technology, a transsexual android, and a hint of slashiness in a blender and hits puree. It's WONDERFUL.

...if you want to borrow it (or possibly get it signed), I will be happy to provide.

I start on Wednesday. I probably will not come for the con, as Drac's Ball is that same weekend, and while I can get to Philadelphia and Boston with equal ease and gas expenditure, I cannot get from one to the other in a reasonable amount of time if I want to attend a concert in one on Friday night and a con in the other the rest of the weekend.

However. You are free to visit at any time, and I shall make an effort to visit at some point in the reasonable future. I will also MOST DEFINITELY be at May Day, should you choose to attend (can we all say 'Yay 10 days of paid vacation right off the bat'? I thought so).
