So, I upgraded AOL twice in two weeks, and this version appears relatively stable. I have only gotten kicked off once, because my modem stopped responding.

I got a new virus checker/firewall package because the last time the virus checker was updating AOL crashed the computer and took the viruschecker with it. That's talented software. I had to reinstall, and when it said it wanted to download 288 updates, I just laughed and went comparison-shopping. I got a $30 rebate on a $35 piece of software. Go me.

I also got a lovely litte game, Alice, which I have been wanting for a long time. It's a version of wonderland that's become twisted, and you're Alice. The Vorpal Sword is a really really big knife and that's just the beginning. You should play this, Rush-That-Speaks.

I applied for better jobs than the one I have now and two people said I am under consideration for employment. So even if I am not working in the Boston area yet I hope I won't work this awful thing for too long.

And one more--I have an old computer game from '91 called Sorcerian. No matter what soundcard option I pick when I install it--even "internal speaker"--it won't play any sound. Am I missing something? I can't find anyone else with this problem on the internet, either.

Rabidfangurl, I've burned all of Wolf's Rain onto disk and will make copies and mail them to you in a few days.

Oh. And while I am on a technology kick--does anyone want a $55 Game Boy Advance? You can get them used at Electronics Boutique for that price.

Now off to eat and go to work.

Syona Keleste, I am going to try and call you this evening after 9 pm.
zelas8x8, I will try to call you tomorrow afternoon.

I am contemplating a new version of Wonderland that needs to be distiguished from the original by saying the old one became twisted.

...

Wow.

Might I suggest dropping AOL and getting MSN? At least you'll have net service that doesn't try to lock down your system (I know. My brother has AOL so I got a first-hand experience when trying to upgrade some software). There's also an ISP that I was with in CT... discovernet.net They only offer dial-up these days, but they were fairly good.

Ahh, I played the demo of that a year or two ago, it was pretty cool, but one level pissed me off because I kept falling :P

Oh yeah, I saw something somewhere about some kind of publishing job in Boston, that they were looking for someone somewhere or heard it from someone but now I can't for the life of me figure out what the devil it was. I remember thinking of you the moment I saw it and thinking, "Ahh, Eredien might be interested in applying for that" but now I can't remember what it was or even where I got it from :(

I'll let you know if I remember, but it's been a few days, might be too late already.

Good to hear you've got over the first hurdle in the job-hunting. The usual warnings about chickens and hatching apply, but if you're under consideration for some jobs, you'll manage it for others too, if you need to. (Sage, I know. *grin*)

I've heard mixed reports about Alice -- it's apparently beautiful, but with pretty flawed gameplay. I doubt I'll be giving it a try any time soon, though. I have a mountain of games I've accumulated over the past four or five years, generally because I've heard good things of it -- and most are still in their shrinkwrap.

I do play some older games, though, so I have a passing familiarity with kicking soundcards until they work. Part of the problem you could be experiencing is that your current card relies purely on Windows DirectSound and doesn't directly emulate a Soundblaster Pro/16 -- which is what a game from 1991 will probably need.

Check your docs, and if it turns out the card does support SB emulation, you'll need to configure it in the software. IRQ 5 and DMA 1 normally works, provided those numbers don't clash with your other hardware.

If the card is Windows only (sadly this applies to most modern cards, from the time of the SB Live! on), you might need to emulate an old PC on your current one. See section 4.6 of the FAQ on my website for some different software that allows you to do this.

As for the PC speaker, it's often not connected to the motherboard these days, because it's rarely needed. Does your PC beep at power-up? If not, it isn't plugged in. <:)

Hope at least some of that helps!

I've got a copy of Alice - I play it off and on. I like it because it's difficult enough to be interesting, but easy enough for such an unskilled gamer as me. :)

I've got it loaded into my laptop, and I found a hintbook a long time ago in a used bookstore - sweet!

*goes off and throws cards at the.. ah... cards. And those nasty screaming things!*
