Good to hear you've got over the first hurdle in the job-hunting. The usual warnings about chickens and hatching apply, but if you're under consideration for some jobs, you'll manage it for others too, if you need to. (Sage, I know. *grin*)
I've heard mixed reports about Alice -- it's apparently beautiful, but with pretty flawed gameplay. I doubt I'll be giving it a try any time soon, though. I have a mountain of games I've accumulated over the past four or five years, generally because I've heard good things of it -- and most are still in their shrinkwrap.

I do play some older games, though, so I have a passing familiarity with kicking soundcards until they work. Part of the problem you could be experiencing is that your current card relies purely on Windows DirectSound and doesn't directly emulate a Soundblaster Pro/16 -- which is what a game from 1991 will probably need.
Check your docs, and if it turns out the card does support SB emulation, you'll need to configure it in the software. IRQ 5 and DMA 1 normally works, provided those numbers don't clash with your other hardware.
If the card is Windows only (sadly this applies to most modern cards, from the time of the SB Live! on), you might need to emulate an old PC on your current one. See section 4.6 of the FAQ on my website for some different software that allows you to do this.
As for the PC speaker, it's often not connected to the motherboard these days, because it's rarely needed. Does your PC beep at power-up? If not, it isn't plugged in. <:)

Hope at least some of that helps!
