Worldcon was a blast! Four days of little sleep, much laughter, and a great deal of thinking and talking with intelligent and interesting people. I got to meet Weyrlady, who is a fun person with many great costumes, and had a wonderful time.
I met Kim Kindya, a BMC alum, who treated me to her fanfic stories over a delicious dim sum dinner. I met the Nielsen Haydns, who (despite having no idea who I was, really) were lovely people and very kind. Four hours of rummage-sale type discussion, about a little bit of everything. I got some wonderful art to hang on my dorm room wall, and drooled over still more at the art show and dealer's room.
And then I went back to college. What a change of pace. I love the place no less, but coming back to it this time was subtly different. I had to keep reminding myself that I am now a sophomore.
And my friendships here now seem to be in some sort of social atomic half-life state.
For those of you who don't know, half-life is not just a computer game. It's how atomic particles decay. If an element has a half-life of an hour, in half an hour, half of it will be gone. In another 15 minutes, a half of the half will be gone. And so on.
It just struck me this weekend that half of my friends graduated last year. Half of my friends left will be graduating this year. And so on. That's not even counting the people who aren't sure if they're coming back next year.
Ah well, I suppose there's always new frosh, and people who've been away on JYA or for various other reasons, to make up the deficit.
It won't be the same, but it can't be bad: "Bryn Mawr calls its own," Irina says. I can't help but believe it - it called me.
