I am going to be not-here this weekend; I am going to visit Rush-that-Speaks and Signy (at least, she'd better be there or have a really good excuse) with Syona Keleste in New York City. And see the kittens. And watch Trigun. And have much fun. Yay. Happy.

That would be the first Metropolis. The second is a movie of the same name, which is based on a manga by Tezuka. Wayman showed it to me the other night.

Wow. Um, wow. How strange. I don't think Wayman'd ever seen my brain break quite that badly before - I don't think that half of the Hydra has, for that matter.

I've just come out of martial arts class and am therefore going to sleep soon, but I have, as of now, only four things to say about this movie:

1.)The soundtrack was amazing.

2.)I found a lot of the backgrounds to be cluttered. It was hard to focus on anything - the visual equivalent of background noise was therefore present for me for most of the film. I was not expecting this and suspect it may have looked better in the theater.

3.)"Um, wow. I don't know if I can say I liked that. I don't know if I can say I hated that. Um, wow. How strange."

4.)It's not every day you see a movie which uses images from your personal worst nightmares as visuals during some of the most important scenes.

I posted on the new Metropolis a couple months ago. Really liked it. Very stunning visuals and I think its a Japanese homage to america's 1910's, 20's and 30's. Did you notice 3 kinds of jazz too? It all weaves together well. Good flick.

If you liked the art, try and see Zhin Ro, which is odd anime. Its a movie, just happens to be animated. Sort of a Japan that never was. Rioters, protestors, terrorists and such. Japan doesn't have those. Wrong culture. Its for grown ups and won't interest kids so only see it when you're ready to watch a serious drama. Btw, its also drawn by those Akira guys, same as Metropolis.

The last really well done anime I've seen lately was Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The artists are from Ninja Scrolls, I think. But its an american only production, from what I understand. Nicely drawn but still basic teen audience, not as grown up as Zhin Ro or Metropolis.

Be sure to keep us updated on your artistic experiences. Its all good for building your writing skills. :)

we've got it, both the old and new version. The new one is very pretty. so very pretty. almost makes up for the fact that it doesn't have a script. went we watched it for the first time we went "ooooh, pretty" and afterwards came to the conclusion that it would have been nice if it was in Japanese so we could turn off the subtitles and not understand what people were saying. for they were mostly not interesting or intelligent things.
but wow, the first few minutes before the dialog are stunning. and every other moment without dialog.
it's a shame the script isn't any good. well directed scenes, beautiful animation, decent acting. script makes all the characters seem like idiots, even the ones that should be intelligent.
we've considered watching the new one with the old one playing but since we can't read subtitles on the old one while watching the new one, this is silly. also, they have apparently changed many things and it wouldn't make any sense.
but very pretty.

I quite liked Metropolis, and was lucky enough to pick it up cheaply on ebay recently.
