it also seems to very often be a location-based name - more could probably be said about that (since it seems unlikely that there'd always be exactly one dorm infested with the things.)

At my college, it was Riley Bugs, after Stanford-Riley Hall, or R'lyeh Bugs, after the sunken island where dread Cthulu waits for the stars to be right.
