Interesting article on Teaching

This article from the New Yorker, "Most Likely to Succeed" by Malcom Gladwell, seems really interesting, talking about different metrics used to measure teachers' effectiveness in the classroom as separate from standardized testing and separate from any credential like a degree. It talks about how it's hard to hire effective teachers correctly when you don't know who will be effective until they are put into a teaching situation.

There are some really good ideas in there. However, I think it discounts the practicum experience that is required for a teaching degree: that is apprenticeship teaching. Though I'll admit some practicums are more useful than others. I won't say more on a public filter.

That was about thirteen kinds of interesting and makes me think a lot about if good teachers are truly taught or made. I also enjoyed the throw-away comment in the middle about skill sets for doctors being so different than the academic credentials.
