What's the last thing you ate? A hint o' mint Newman-oreo.

What's your favorite cheese? I don't eat cheese anymore, but cottage cheese.

What's your favorite fish? I don't eat fish anymore, but eel, and tuna, and flying fish eggs.

What's your favorite fruit? Pears. OMG pears. (The real ones, not the ones in cans. I had a 100-year old pear tree in my backyard growing up, so I have to seek out pears that don't taste like mealy ashes. Those are not pears. Those are disgusting.) Berries of all sorts. I like the texture of lychees. Good peaches. Oddly, I like watermelon now after not liking it for about 18 years. But it's not my favorite. My favorite, in case you missed it, is PEARS!

When, if ever, did you start liking olives? I have always liked olives. Blame my father. I also like sucking pimentos out of green olives.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer? Only about a year ago. It suprised me. R. weaned me off of lembic onto other beers. I still like ligher beers, though, not too strong.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? Early...my parents used to know people who fished for lobsters. We would eat them about an hour after we caught them. I grew up eating fried clams on special occasions. Raw clams I also liked. And sea urchin. I'm glad I had it about a month before I went vegan. I don't eat shellfish anymore. I especially don't eat calamari after I found out that squid can actually use a kind of sign language with their tentacles (more on that in a moment), as "if it can talk to me I don't eat it" is one of my cardinal rules. I used to like shrimp but stopped eating it even before I heard the infamous Shrimp Lecture because it started tasting too fishy to me. I am working on making an entirely vegan sushi simalcrum bento box.

What was the best thing your parent/s used to make? My father makes this party fruit salad that's pretty good, and grills pork chops well unless his attention wanders from the grill. My mom makes a good rhubarb pie, but it's the recipie more than the cook on that one. She makes amazing giblet gravy.

What's the native specialty of your home town? Half-moon cookies--note to self-try to make these soon. Or bad (good) pizza.

What's your comfort food? Sushi. Tea. Green peas. Aforementioned cookies. Fresh green beans, raw. Rhubarb pie.

What's your favorite type of chocolate? Dark. I also like the mint-orange hot cocoa they serve at Algiers restaurant.

How do you like your steak? I don't, anymore, but when I did pink and juicy. Rip off bone. Mmm.

How do you like your burger? I am imagining a juicy veggie burger, for the record, not the oaty mealy kind. Lettuce and tomato, cold. A little mustard. A little ketchup. No mayo. Maybe some cheese or thin-sliced red onions. On a somewhat crusty french bread roll. Occasionally, mushrooms.

How do you like your eggs? I don't, anymore, but I miss them. I like the texture. Poached, or coddled, or hard-boiled.

How do you like your potatoes? Baked. With broccolli, sour cream, chives, mushrooms, cheese, and bacon bits. Probably vegan, now. Thank you, Wendy's.

How do you take your coffee? Not often anymore--it upsets my stomach--but with a ton of soy creamer and sugar.

How do you take your tea? Hot and black. Sometimes if it's earl grey, with a tiny bit of creamer.

What's your favorite mug? Of mugs I own, the mug which I got in the Adirondacks which reminds me of a family trip. Of mugs I currently have in the cupboard, the big blue mug, or the mug from my church. Of mugs I don't own, the blue and brown glazed pottery mug of my mother's of which I am inordinately fond.

What's your cookie of choice? Lemon rosemary. Or the aforementioned half-moon.

What's your ideal breakfast? Fresh berries and a croissant and fresh orange juice.

What's your ideal sandwich? I don't eat many sandwiches anymore; vegan lunchmeat is horrible. Probably grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup. It used to be corned beef.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? Thick chewy outer crust surrounding thinner (but still thick and sturdy and chewy) lower crust (somewhat french-bread like), brushed with olive oil. Topping: homemade tomato sauce with rosemary. A little bit of garlic. Some grilled pineapple, cut small. Small amount of onions. Heavy mushroom coverage. Green peppers. Possibly a tiny bit of vegan bacon crumbled uniformly over the top. Some cheese, not too much. That's it.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)? Rhubarb. Mince if you haven't got rhubarb. I also enjoy berry pie but it's not the first thing I think of when I think of pie.

What's your ideal salad? Fresh green mix, including something called "oak leaf" lettuce, which I found in the supermarket one day in a mix, and apparently fills my craving for exactly a kind of taste I had no idea I was missing. Fresh tomatoes, green and red--lots, please. Slivered almonds, or maybe walnuts or pecans. Lemon juice. Pepper. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing, tossed.

Alternately: red seedless grapes, cut in half and tossed with frech black pepper. That's it.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge? Rice vinegar. Mustard. Capers. Soy Margarine. Soymilk. Juice of some sort. Tofu of various types. Soy sausages. Lemons and limes. Occasionally I will go on a cucumber week. Sri racha sauce. Soy margarine. Umi (plum) paste. Carrots.

What food do you always like to have in the freezer? The most recent bread. Pizza dough. Ice. Vegetable dumplings for when I am feeling lazy and want something fast to eat.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? Flour, bread and all-purpose, and wheat flour. Baking soda and powder. Chocolate chips. Various spices, esp. cinnamon. Tomato sauce. Soy sauce. Rice, brown and white. Mirin. Onions. Potatoes. Garlic. A bit of cereal. Dried fruits of some sort. Nuts. Vanillia extract. Tea. Honey. Vinegar. Some kind of bean or lentil. Jam. Peanut butter. Seaweed.

What spices can you not live without? Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, herbes de provence, sesame seeds, star anise, fennel, rosemary, oregano. Arrowroot powder. Chinese five-spice powder from penzey's. Fresh basil is nice. Fresh chives are nice. Pepper, white and black, to grind. Salt, kosher and regular. Pickled ginger.

What sauces can you not live without? Mustard. Rice vinegar. Occasionally I use vegan worcstershire. Ketchup.

Where do you buy most of your food? Shaw's, Whole Foods, Japanese market, and sometimes the grocery in Chinatown when I get there.

How often do you go food shopping? About once a week. Sometimes a little more.

What's the most you've spent on a single food item? I bought some saffron once for a dinner. That was expensive. I would have to say that my last spice trip to Penzey's was expensive, too; I am glad I only need to go about once a year.

What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own? Probably the crockpot or breadmaker, though both were gifts. Oh, wait, the microwave. But I hardly ever use it for cooking. Just melting stuff or reheating tea.R. points out that it's actually the rice cooker.

What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? A new can opener.

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? A pot, a frying pan, a can opener, the wooden spoon/spatula combo. Probably also the pink silicone spatula. The breadmaker.

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? I usually cook at least 11 times a week. It's easy when you're vegan and kind of have to cook and have a more limited restaurant selection, and since I am cooking bento at least 2 or 3 times a week...I am guessing 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 5 suppers on average, sometimes more sometimes less. I am counting bread I made myself in the breadmaker and then toasted as cooking. Is that cheating?

What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? Soup which I posted earlier today.

What's your favorite thing to make for yourself? Probably soup. Maybe cookies or plum pudding.

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey? Duck, goose, snail (is it a meat?), venison, I think some rabbit in a pie in England, lamb.

What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? I don't remember.

What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild? I picked some raspberries for R. and ate one to show her it was ok. I also had some lambs'-quarters last year.

Place the following cuisines in order of preference (greatest to least): sushi, Thai, Mexican. Indian/Chinese tied, French, Italian.

Place the following boozes in order of preference (greatest to least): tequila, gin, brandy, vodka, rum, whiskey.

Place the following flavors in order of preference (greatest to least): lime, ginger, aniseed, basil, garlic. I like them all.

Bread and spread: Homemade french bread with butter or maybe some honey.

What's your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? It's hard to get vegan fast food. Probably just french fries, or nothing.

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? Tea. If it's been a hard day, probably a gin and tonic with elderflower liquor. If it's been a really hard day, warm milk with cinnamon.

Favorite cookbook/s? The Tassajara break book. "Bread Machine" cookbook. Middle eastern food cookbook. Ice cream/sorbet with flowers book.

Got any favorite food blogs? Syllabub. Orangette.

What's the next thing you'll eat? French toast from yesterday's floofy rice loaf, with maple syrup or possibly berries. I added the yeast in wrong. Bad toast, hard to cut--but will make brilliant french toast.

I love baklava, for what it's worth.

Do you not count the rice cooker as yours? Because that is totally our most expensive appliance.

If that recipe for half-moon cookies doesn't work, I have one that is apparently very authentic (I have never had half-moon cookies in their native habitat; I just thought the recipe looked tasty, but it made one of my dad's coworkers very happy).

It's hard to get vegan fast food.

I probably still agree with you on the fries, but it's not that hard if you're at Taco Bell or Subway to get something like a meal. Not that the food is any good.

(Basically, other than honey in the wheat/roll and cheese on the cheese breads, they're vegan.)

Okay, it seems like they've changed tortilla ingredients since I last went there, so now it's much harder. Nevermind. :/ The cinnamon twists are vegan, though.
