[livejournal.com profile] raxvulpine writes: A new literary project, Place/Time will publish poetry, short stories, and creative non-fiction on an annual basis, arranging the works chosen thematically by some specific place and time. Ideally, Place/Time will provide work that captures the atmosphere of place and time in a collection that can be turned to in the future to evoke their sense. While some of this evocation should be indirect, special attention will be paid to works that deal with actual events and places. The design and production of each issue will, similarly, aim to evoke an environment not necessarily familiar to the reader.

Submissions are currently open for the first issue of Place/Time, which will focus on Boston in 1997.

Out there, the NASA Pathfinder space probe lands on Mars, and the Pegasus rocket takes off with the remains of Timothy Leary and Gene Roddenberry in the first space burial. Closer to home, IBM's Deep Blue defeats Gary Kasparov --- the first time a computer beats a champion in a match. Bill Clinton bars federal funding for research on human cloning. The Heaven's Gate cult dons their Nikes. Billy Crystal hosts the Academy Awards.

Of interest to Boston, the Packers beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. The Garden is demolished. Nomar plays his rookie season. In early February in Newton, baby-shaking becomes a topic of conversation. At the end of October, British au pair Louise Woodward is found guilty. MASS CANN/NORML wins an injunction forcing the City of Boston to issue a permit for their rally.

These aren't the topics we are looking for; rather, this is a kind of centering. What we are seeking is fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and artwork caught up somehow with this location, and in this year. That being said, we are excited to consider quality work that doesn't fit exactly, but which you feel overlaps thematically. In order to create a richer tapestry of voices, we ask that you only consider submitting work under 5,000 words.

Please send submissions to submissions@placetime.org as plain text, doc format, or pdf attachment. Include your name, and an e-mail address you can be reached at. Payment is 10$ and 2 copies. Our deadline is Nov. 21. (though that may be extended, if our manufacturing schedule allows it).
