eredienWell. I hate computers. In an effort to make my computer more user friendly for the man who is supposed to come and see why the internet does't work after 5 on every day except Saturdays, I decided to try and get rid of the system of multiple users I had set up on my computer so no one else would delete my files.
This was a VERY BAD IDEA.
I backed up my user files, deleted my user id, and proceeded to restart the computer, assuming that everything would default back to the settings I'd set up for my user id.
They instead reverted to the settings I'd tried to set up for the Guest id but never finished working on. These settings lock you out of every progam on the computer, internet and telnet and email included (not like I could use them anyway) and the registry and the configuration programs. I tried to create a new user and copy in all my old files, but windows didn't seem to notice they'd changed.
Why don't they just add password protection to individual files and folders like we've been asking for years now?
Yes. I know. If I had a mac none of this would have happened....thank God for backups. I've put all my personal files on the CD rom I keep for such things, and am going to restart my computer and revert it to the last time I used the user backup, hoping nothing irretrivable is lost.
And then I get to write a four page essaysw, because I just spent two hours trying to recover my computer enough to get wordpad to run and print, to no avail.
I don't know how long it's going to be before my computer is working the way I want it to again, and have no idea how long it will be until the internet is fixed - I'm typing this from a hallmate's computer.

1/10/01 04:50 (UTC)To fix your problem, you may have to reinstall windows... I've never had to reinstall it without having to format the entire HD first so I don't know how that works for a re-install without erasing everything else. Eep... I hope you can get it fixed, maybe that systems guy can fix it for you! *hugs*
Anyway, just want to say here (since you can't get email) I had fun at the ren fest and will tell you all about it when you are able to get online again. Oh and I got you something too :) *grins*
