I often ask people if they can name a science fiction or fantasy world that they would like to live in as an ordinary person. - David Brin, via the Devniad.

Any of John Crowley's worlds would be fine, especially if I got to live in Little Belaire from Engine Summer. Scarily enough, I wouldn't mind living in the Dark Tower set of universes. Perelandra would also be amazing.

Transmetropolitan. I say this half tongue-in-cheek, but it's true: it's basically this earth with all the cool shit magnified and the bad shit about the same as it ever was. Even as an average joe there's just tons of possibility.

Fantasy worlds don't have to be that bad, either. It's just that most of them are so ... non-egalitarian.

(And I'm specifically not counting TTU because, for an average person, it's just not all that different from today's here's reality. Perhaps a little scarier, but not different in the way of most SF/F worlds.)

Ack! I'm not remembering half the s.f./fantasy worlds I've read about!

Xanth might be nice. Pern, too. I've only just begun playing FF-X, so I don't know what Spira's like at the end of the story. Middle Earth for an ordinary human would probably be a lot like pre-industrial Earth, so, for that I might as well just stay here without running water & electricity. Melanie Rawn's world of the "Dragon Scroll" series might be a little more interesting; I forget what she called that world.
