IE thinks it's Mozilla

eredienI've been having a lot of computer crashes and hangs lately when I'm using IE. Problems stop for a while when I clear out my cache and cookies, but come back suddenly and abruptly. For example, today amazon.com told me it thought I was using Mozilla. I only had Mozilla on here seven months ago for two days and uninstalled it with no problems.
I recently updated my virus checker and scanned my system within the past week.
What is going on? Can anyone help? Generally IE just freezes as it is trying to load a page and the entire computer freezes so badly I have to manually shut it off and restart it.
I am using IE 6 on Win98.
I am also thinking about other stuff but that isn't more than ramblings at this time of night.
