eredien: Dancing Dragon (Default)

My paper is done. Yay.

Sounds get strange late at night. The hum of the radio suddenly seems too loud and the walls too thin to contain the thready jazz.

When I was home a few weeks ago, I dropped off a movie at the after-hours slot at the video rental store in the shopping center.
It was two am. Everything was dark. Even on the main road, there was no sound, no movement of cars. The stoplights changed with nothing there, flicking some morse code of their own into the darkness as they all changed in sequence: stop, go, go, go.

There was nothing but the gentle hum of the idling car as I got out, and the sound of my own footsteps on the pavement, day-sounds grown too big for the night world.

I dropped the box in the slot, and it clunked down with a whisper of artifice: plastic and aluminum. I turned.

Through the empty whitewashed stuccoed arcades the piped-in music was still playing.

The air was sweet that night, but I drove home with the windows up and the radio off.
