I find that it is helpful to respect people's own self-definitions even if you, for whatever reason, don't agree with them--that way, you won't keep insisting that moderate Muslims are all terrorists, for instance, and piss them off; likewise, you may be less confused and angry when the Westboro Baptist folks pray to a peace-loving God (even though you may still be quite angry and confused). In short, it keeps you from screwing up in some really important ways when interacting with these people.
