So I might have thrush!

I've been having trouble breathing and swallowing since after the ear infection--two weeks ago I started wheezing like a maniac outside the vet's office and had to be picked up--and I thought it was just a result of the ear infection + hives.

However, after consulting with my mom (a nurse), I think I now have thrush! Wow! I'll get to go to the doctor again this week!

Some of the major causes of thrush are:
- stress (check)
- antibiotic use (check, thanks ear infection)
- steroid use (check, thanks hive medication)

Good god.

There are coconut-based and soy-based yogurts but most of them have sugar (or fruit, which also has sugar).

I didn't see "eating yogurt" listed as one of the treatments for thrush; I saw "prescription mouthwash from a doctor."

Where did you see info about yogurt? Also, I know yogurt does good things to restore the enzyme balance in your stomach, but I don't know why that would clear up a fungal infection in your mouth...

A friend of mine on LJ and her kids got thrush, and I thought I remembered that they ate yogurt and used Gentian Violet (? something purple) to help combat it. Googling for "thrush yogurt" suggests to me that yogurt might be able to help, but probably on its own isn't enough to cure thrush, and as long as you avoid sugar, wouldn't hurt. I believe that the idea is that the live yeast from the yogurt displaces the yeast that causes thrush. Hm, googling for "thrush violet" pulls up some concerns about cancer.

Since both my parents have had skin cancer already, I am not going to do anything that ups my risk for any cancer at all without talking to a doctor first.
