a.) Install a Kindle reader on Linux
result: Wine doesn't want to open the file

b.) Redirect basic website for my dad from 5 different URLs
result: My father does not understand what case sensitive passwords are and hasn't logged into his email account in over a year, so he's going to be on the phone with tech support for a very long time on Monday.

c.) Buy food I can eat
result: Tofu, soymilk, lasting totally irrational hatred for mashed parsnips

d.) Talk to [livejournal.com profile] doma
result: Insight near citrus aisle

e.) Write to guy who might help me find a job
result: most recent copy of resume on a recently failed backup hard drive in Indiana, will start over from scratch on Monday

d.) Try and call my sister
result: voicemail

e.) Call pastor for the third time
result: short text message, promise to call Monday

f.) Figure out if I have the correct MA residency documents to get my license changed back to MA again
result: I think I can just use my checks from two months ago

g.) Not be really sad and frustrated and angry
result: abort/retry/fail?

I realize this doesn't help you immediately, but once I'm actually home, I can do some harder-core diagnostics on your backup hard drive from my Linux machine and potentially network-host files for you if they are recoverable. Or I can just send it to you if you'd prefer local help.

That is a very frustrating day on top of everything that was already going on. You have every right to be frustrated. That you can look at it with a dry sense of humor and try not to let it frustrate you even so is a sign of great strength.

*hugs*

This is three times this summer that I've wished I'd bought that copy of SpinRite I wanted. Sometimes I think maybe I should do more impulse spending.

Kindle under Wine - you need to use the older "beta" version of Kindle for PC - A little googling on "Kindle" "WINE" and "Beta" should do it.

The old one works like a charm. The new one...does not.
