Neil Gaiman's new kid's book,
Coraline, now has
a website. So I went to go check and see if they had any nifty stuff up to read.
I found the quotes comparing it to
Alice in Wonderland kind of pretentious. Until I stumbled on the chapter excerpt.
This is the kind of book I want to go read right now. This is the kind of book that, had I found it as a child along with some of the other stuff I found, would have blasted my mind wide open and left me going, "ulp" and running up past the stairs.
And this would have been a good thing - those books are the ones that I come back to, that I use as touchstones for why I am today, and how my brain works, and what I find scary or lovable or reassuring. And that told me not to trust the world, because sometimes it shifts under your feet.
This is the kind of book I wanna write.
