Berries

On Tuesday, after I took my sister, my sister's friend, and myself to the local zoo, we drove the friend back to her house. They have berry bushes around her house, and (since I adore fresh berries in nearly everything) decided to pick some. So, in an hour or so, I had two tupperwares' worth of sour cherries and currants, respectively.
I really like sour things. I'm one of those people who eat raw lemon slices and then complain that they're not sour enough. So picking the sour cherries was fun: one for me, three for the container was my final ratio. The friend's cat also decided to climb up in the tree and investigate the cherries when I was picking them...I turned about and her face was an inch from mine.
Currants are more annoying to pick than cherries - they're very small and the bushes tend to harbor Japanese Beetles - but they have this delicate little taste that is a burst of sweetness followed by a sour, nearly bitter, aftertaste. The sun shining through the bunches of currants is a sight that everyone should see at least once in their life, I think it's beautiful.
I'd forgotten how, when we were smaller, my friend Anna and I (the older sister of my friend's sister) would go out in the backyard and eat the berries, pretending they gave us magical superhero powers. Forget ice cream. To me, currants taste of summer.
