This is fanfic for Osamu Tezuka's Blackjack series.
I'm sorry that it's depressing.

Today, I will turn off the answering machine.

Yesterday, I went to the store.
"My, aren't you a big girl," the clerk said, smiling down at me as I passed the money over the counter for the tea, the egg quick-breads. "Your parents must be very proud to have such a helpful young daughter."

I smiled at her, and did a little pirouette, and took the bag, and started crying when I was halfway home.
Halfway. That's a little better than yesterday.

I was putting the groceries away when the doorbell rang; the sudden noise of it startled me. I lost my balance. Over went the chair. The bread mix dropped, exploded out of the carton as it hit the floor.

I shook lemon flour from my dress as best I could and went to the door as quickly as I ever did in the days when he was alive, and it was necessary to do things like that.

A man I didn't recognize was standing there. He was wearing sunglasses, but took them off when he saw me. "You'll need help moving the body."

"Yes. Thank you."

The house, at least, has no lack of disposal facilities for that kind of thing.
It's mine now, with the money. He said so in his will. I don't know what I will do with it. It was always too big for me---everything is--but there's no one else here to fill it up anymore.

I played the tape one more time before I erased it.
I was entitled to at least that much of him.
