For this drabble you need to know three things:
- Eathan’s world was sold to real-estate developers.
- The “Auryn” is a gem from the book The Neverending Story which enables and exhorts its wearers to “do as you wish.”
- Eathan is now in possession of it.
Note: Crow is Mouse's character, but she belonged here so I had to put her in. Mouse, this can be an alternate universe Crow if you like, but they were falling in love and fading to black and all last we saw our intrepid heroes...
Hope you like it, Gaudior.
Eathan drabble
Two weeks later the planar parking garage’s concrete is pockmarked, its pillars unstable. A crowbar and a world taken back in fragments are on the kitchen table in his apartment. Half-melted silverware, pottery shards, a charred squirrel carved from dark wood. The dragon’s nine-foot jawbone has fragments of asphalt stuck to it. Evenings spent in cleaning it are the most exhausting he ever knows: under sponge, soap, hand, chisel, it sings like bells, moves like the live thing it once belonged to.
Crow watches him across the room, edits proofs of his herbal, waits to tell him of their child.

15/5/05 03:26 (UTC)It's nice to know that Eathan and Crow were able to stay together, though. I guess he must be a little more at ease with himself than when I first read about him.
Do you have one "canon" version of what happens to him and is this part of it, or are you just playing around?

15/5/05 21:46 (UTC)Well, I don't think him getting the Auryn is canon. But he definitely at some point in the future writes a herbal. It's fourteeen volumes, hand-illustrated and illuminated, and complete. It becomes something of a classic in its field.
The stuff that's canon is mostly all on the Nexus archives though there's a bit more of "Lift the Wings" which I never posted to the list which I can give you if you like.
I might write more with Eathan in the future; who knows? This got him past the block where he's been for years.
