Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast, Suzy McKee Charnas

A retelling of what you think it is. But not in the way you think it is. A heroine who in many ways reminds me of Phedre.

What you've all been waiting for: translations from the "Slavic Mythology" book. Thank you to Skye, who did these with me.

These are on the "Slavic Water Spirits" page. And I only wish I knew the story about the wolf. Or what "mermaid week" is.

Fordlings - Spirits, guardians of the fords, graceful maidens with long hair. These fordlings live devotedly together with the beavers in quiet backwaters. When an enemy draws near, the maidens imperceptibly destroy the ford, leading the enemies into a bog or whirlpool.

Lobasti - mermaids, who dwell in the rushes. The belief is that these are children who died unchristened, or were maidens who drowned. Agile, playful, graceful, they play games and pranks all the time. During "mermaid week," they can walk off with your little girls, to entice and make them into their best friend--another lobasta.

Anchootka - evil spirits, demons, who inhabit the swamps and have wings. They are helpers of waters and swamps. In fairy tales, he only has four fingers because Wolf bit off his pinky.
