I'm going to have to agree with Kevin on this one. There is, sadly, a whole set of pseudo-Christian sects who actually do believe something like this -they're basically the lunatic fringe of the born-agains- and Robertson is a prominent figure to those. It's a shame that a man like Robertson could rise to such heights of prestige, but I suppose it happens sometimes.
The way that I see it, he and his ilk (Graham, Falwell, and so forth) would make an excellent parallel to the Pharisees of Jesus' time. Their opulence, their self-righteousness, and their showiness all certainly fit, and it was exactly these aspects of the Pharisees which Jesus spoke out against.
