I got up this morning and went to Russian class, not entirely looking forward to the test (though I have studied), and discovered that our professor had had car troubles and gave us the final as a take-home. It's a beautiful day with the sun shining and the grass kind of sparkly from the frost that visited overnight, and life is a beautiful thing.

Why am I so entirely happy? Well, I watched a Hayao Miyazaki movie last night: Kiki's Delivery Service. For those of you who have seen Miyazaki's work, you understand. For those of you who haven't, please do anything you can to go watch his movies. They are, simply put, awe-inspiring. Not all of his work, I've been told, is as happy as - for example - Kiki's. However, the stuff that is dark is darker in a way that apparently also manages to be uplifting. For those of you who saw Princess Mononoke, it's the same man.

I'd been feeling a little down lately (not much, not often, and not seriously, but it was there), and I'd been thinking, "what can I do to feel better?" And then my friends asked me if I wanted to watch "this Miyazaki video." And I did. And, if I had a chance, I'd watch it again right now.

Why are they so good? They inspire joy at the wonder of life.

If I had a lot of money, I'd seriously try to set up some kind of a film festival of all his films, and show them to the world: I honestly think that if everyone saw this movie (and, from what I hear, all of them are this good), the happiness quotient of the world would go up a little. My face still hurts from smiling.

And I am firmly convinced that Miyazaki's work is shown in the theaters of heaven.
