Hugos for the Rest of Us

There's a lot of science fiction and fantasy stuff--good stuff, too--that you can only find on the internet.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were awards for such things? Awards that didn't involve you trekking halfway around the world, spending too much money, and getting accosted by drunk sf fans singing "Rocket Ride" while trying to find the way back to your hotel room after the 1 am showing of Red Dwarf (as much fun as that actually is)?

Now, there is.
The Wooden Rocket Awards. Vote online for your favorite online sf and fantasy sites, in categories ranging from "Best Author Site" to "Best Fan TV Site" and everything inbetween.

It's free. And the only catch is that you have to sign up for a pretty spiffy-looking, and also free, email newsmagazine that (*gasp*) puts its privacy policy right on the sign-up page.

Have fun!

one big catch

Cheryl Morgan, SH contributor and member of the World Science Fiction Society's Mark Protection Committee, warned the SH staff list about this award:

There are also some annoying trademark issues here. These guys appear to be deliberately challenging WSFS's right to the Hugo mark, because they can, because they have nothing much to lose, and because they find it amusing to cause trouble. The end result may well be to cost WSFS (and therefore Worldcons) a lot of money, and a small possibility of losing the mark protection and opening up aspects of the Hugo Award to any commercial organization that cares to come in and use it.

Also note that there's no requirement that you attend a Worldcon to nominate or vote on the Hugos. You need only have a Supporting Membership, comparatively much cheaper. It's not free, but you also get all the WSFS mailings for the year, I think.
