I'm guessing the comics were illustrating the text, as is usual for these things. Ulysses has been repeatedly banned for its content (and often the bans later repealed for its literary value).

I know Ulysses has been repeatedly banned—the copy I own was smuggled into this country (on very cheap paper) in 1928. I just thought we'd gotten past that stage!
Of course not. :) Looks to me like we'll have to send off at least another generation or two before we get there in the US, and then there are various African and Middle Eastern nations to work on.
